My Story

My symptoms of thyroid cancer were ignored for more than a year by doctors. I was told I had anxiety and that "my labs were normal" over and over again. It was cancer.

After finally insisting on an ultrasound, I received a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. A fine needle biopsy confirmed this, and I was scheduled for a thyroidectomy. When I woke up from the surgery, everything changed.

I felt like crap. I was steadily gaining weight, regardless of exercise and nutrition. I constantly felt fatigued and bloated. My body ached, and I suffered from chronic headaches, declining vision, deteriorating dental health, a plummeting libido, and a severely impaired short-term memory. It made me wonder, "Is this going to be my life from now on?"

Meanwhile, my endocrinologist and primary physician consistently disregarded my pleas for help, dismissing my concerns with "your labs are normal." Fed up with their indifference, I decided to seek a new physician who actually listened to me and ordered comprehensive labs. The results were alarming. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (which affects 25% of post-thyroidectomy patients). My thyroid hormone levels were far from normal because I was grossly under-medicated. (my TSH was at 7, and free T3 was at 2.1). I had deficiencies in testosterone and progesterone, as well as vitamin and mineral deficiencies, high inflammation, elevated cholesterol, an increased A1C and fasting glucose (indicating insulin resistance). Additionally, a rheumatologist diagnosed me with Lupus several months later.

The shocking revelation was that my doctors had neglected to order proper lab work or interpret the results correctly. It was infuriating to suffer while being overlooked by the very professionals who should have been helping me. Amidst my battle with post-thyroidectomy symptoms, I received another blow—a diagnosis of cervical cancer. I had early stage cervical cancer, and it was recommended that I have a hysterectomy and radiation. At this point, I did want another surgery and I was struggling with my faith in the healthcare system. A friend suggested a holistic approach to treat my cancer. Initially skeptical, I committed to trying it for six months as my cancer was early stage squamous cell carcinoma and slow growing. A week after my 6-month follow up, I received a call from my oncologist that there was no sign of cancer and to follow up regularly every 6-months for monitoring. I couldn't believe it. That's when I recognized that a total body approach to health and well being using integrative medicine has power.

I decided to to enroll in a holistic health certification program and began researching as much as I could to learn more about holistic care. I also wanted to learn more about conventional care because I believe strongly in the benefits of conventional care when applied appropriately. With a BA in Sports Management and an MS in Exercise Science, I decided to go back to school to pursue a PhD in Integrative Medicine. I also studied under a mentor to learn about proper testing and treatment for thyroid disorders, hormonal conditions and autoimmune diseases. I wanted to empower myself with knowledge to then empower others in the same position I had been in.

I now live symptom free and feel amazing! I regained control over my life and my body. How did I do it?

It started with:

  • Comprehensive lab testing

  • A thorough evaluation of my symptoms and medical history

  • An assessment of my supplements and medications

  • A review of my lifestyle, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress

  • Addressing past trauma

Then, based on the evaluation, I implemented:

  • Proper dosages of t4 and t3 thyroid medication

  • Hormone replacement therapy

  • A targeted supplement protocol

  • Continued adherence to a balanced nutrition and exercise plan

  • Improved sleep quality and stress management

  • Trauma healing

You possess the power to heal. If you are ready to feel amazing, let's work together to help your body heal from within. I assure you that taking this first step toward a healthier, happier you will be worth it.
